Film Title: Bullshit *

Year of Release: 2005

Synopsis: follows the day-to-day activism of activist Dr. Vandana Shiva, as she continue to fight for people’s rights and freedoms; a seed activist, a food security activist, a water rights activist, an eco-feminist, and a climate justice activist, this documentary focuses on Shiva’s fight against gene-modified seeds and biotechnology company Monsanto Corporation and the European Patents Administration as well as her solidarity with Indian villagers (and their global supporters) protesting Coca-Cola’s operations and their use of local groundwater.

Note about the film’s title: The filmmakers are referencing two meanings of “bullshit”.  One meaning refers to cow dung which villagers in India use as a building material. The other meaning refers to Vandana Shiva (and her supporters) ‘calling bullshit on’ Monsanto who is arguing that gene modified seeds and crops will bring rural India, particularly farmers, out of poverty; Shiva and supporters are also calling bullshit on proponents of neoliberalism and globalization who are arguing that so-called free markets will improve the quality of living for more people. (In this film, Shiva is also presented with a “Bullshit Award” from one of her fiercest opponents, implying that her opponents have ‘called bullshit on’ her.)
